As the political center of the Akarnanian League, Stratos was the largest city in Akarnania. However, its coinage is very rare. Minting began around 425 BC with this issue, distinguished by two facing heads: the obverse features the river god Achelöos, the most water-rich river in Greece, while the reverse depicts his daughter, the nymph Kallirhoë.
